I think the wording indicates Across or Down clues.

Ginge, I took it to mean that they were across or down clues, eg 'mounting'

I did find those three across and down clues helpful.

Thanks syzygy & mattrom, I did see these indicators but thought the preamble was suggesting more specific placement ie which quadrant; not that it made any real difference.

Okay, everyone just settle down. We're criss-crossing like crazy here.

And I swear Ginge's post #9 wasn't there either.
Liked those clues too, though raised an eyebrow about Q3d re bull / cow.
