I went for GNOMONICS on the grounds that MN appears elsewhere -- albeit with a different resultant sound.

if the theme is silent letters then mnemonics is viable as we don't have a silent M in another unclued (39a has MN but it's the N that's silent) ?

I’m stuck on 5d. I have ?a?es. Am I right in thinking that it is a country in the UK?

Eevan, yes, a UK country. W(ith) and the answer to the other clue mentioned. I can't remember the exact wording, hope this is right!
