I went for GNOMONICS on the grounds that MN appears elsewhere -- albeit with a different resultant sound.

That is a very good point Throck - Doc did say in the rubric that each was different, my sincere apologies to him!

if the theme is silent letters then mnemonics is viable as we don't have a silent M in another unclued (39a has MN but it's the N that's silent) ?
