Unusual to see nobody asking for help with the Sunday Times cryptic ... until now! Just me then ...

Can't parse one of the clues.

16a I popped into friend's for a beer (4) P?L?

Presumably, pale (as in pale ale). But if I 'pop' I into PAL, I get PAIL. Help!

Hi stevea, pils; i for a in pal's

16a: Pils = beer (def)
pal's - friend's
Replace the "a" with "i", a instructed in the clue

PILS (Type of beer)

Friend's = PAL'S with "I" (Popping in for) "A"
