Hi cerasus
I've just checked about half a dozen bird books, and none mention "ree". To be fair, though, a couple don't even mention "reeve" as the female.

I have checked online and this is from one dictionary

Ree
rare, historical

The female of the ruff, Philomachus pugnax; = "reeve".

I knew of Reeve, but consulted Chambers for Ree and admit I had not heard of Ree before today.

Interesting, cerasus!

When I was little, riddles often started "Riddle me ree" - at last I know what this referred to!
