Away on holiday so only just catching up.

I’ve seen elsewhere that the answer to 12ac (Say somersault) is SEASON, which I don’t get at all. It also raises a question about 6d (PO’s on bus) which I couldn’t decide on BONUS or BOSUN.

According to Chambers bosun is a foreman or warrant officer, not a petty officer.

So, why SEASON and BOSUN?

Collins gives ' a petty officer on a merchant ship' for Bosun, so that seems to work.

Hi, Tim.

12A Double homophone - summer + salt, both meaning "season".

6D I too noticed the warrant/petty officer irregularity when consulting Chambers. My Oxford does not specify ("a ship's officer in charge of equipment and the crew").

From farlex online dictionary
Bosun - a warrant officer on a warship, or a petty officer on a merchant vessel, in charge of rigging, anchors, cables, etc.
