Thanks syzygy, good fun and yet another format. Some lovely surfaces with my favourites including 1: 2, 4, & 10. 2: 5 & 7 and 3: 7. Love the definition 3: 17 even if wordplay confirmation required googling this side of the pond.

I enjoyed it too and needed less help than usual. Liked #3-10 (even though still can't parse properly) and several others.
Google sometimes unhelpful. If you Google Bale's makeup you get into Christian Bale's company! Yet the answer to the def is so simple (thank you aristo.)

Beautiful clues. I thought 3:17 was superb (he was a bit stocky as I recall- don't know if he had a toupe).
For 3:10 it's Professor PLUM from the game Clue with nude dancing inside.

Forgot to thank the only forum member I've actually met (yes, he's real, though he may not say the same about me).

Oh, Professor PLUM. Would never have thought of that. Never played the game, though I thinkthere is a Col. Mustard.
Anyone who's curious, this is an easier puzzle than the WSJ ones often are and there's some help on their website.
Yes, thank you syzygy

Is the definition bale?
Or what makes up a bale maybe?

What makes up the bale is the def.
Skin imperfection
