A very enjoyable crossword, which took longer than usual, but haven't worked these two out yet:-
1 Down - "Beef - love digging into piece" The answer is either MOAN or MEAT, but I can't get "piece" into the equation.
18 Down - "Leaves disconnected phone around middle of den"
The answer would appear to be LETTUCE but I have.t fully worked it out.

1d: moan = beef (def)
man- piece (as on chess board)
o - love

18d: Yes, I had "lettuce".... but I couldn't parse it, either!

I read it as...

Disconnected phone = CUT TEL(ephone) around/reversed + (d)E(n)

18 Cut Tel, disconnected phone and the E in the centre of Den.

Thanks, Elle - I forgot about the chess piece.
Perhaps some kind soul will enlighten us on the other clue!
