I can’t quite parse 24d:

Old red johnson in elephant, somewhat upstanding.

I’m pretty sure it’s LENIN (=old red), and ‘elephant, somewhat upstanding’ is NEL(IE) backwards. Can’t see where johnson comes into it, or where the NI comes from.
