I hadn't known that vise is a US spelling till I saw it in Chambers. We never spell it with a C for that meaning.

With due deference to Mattrom I didn't object to Paul's use of 'stay' as 'is' and my reading of Chambers - in my view - supports him.

I liked his original pithy No. 5 so that gets my vote.
