It’s number 17 across. PITT or PICT. Foul den is simple enough but is it c for caught in the middle? What is the definition then? Or t for trollope with Pitt the writer as definition?

Azed puzzles use the Chambers Dictionary as their primary reference, and anything in there is fair game. Chambers gives 'Pict' as "Steele's term for a painted woman".

Thanks, jack natter. I do use Chambers but must have missed this reference. Teach me to check more carefully next time!
