Collins Dictionary has "pistol" under "heat", American slang.

HI Cerasus, Rusty, Rossim, Rob and Tyke51 - I think it was just yesterday that I was saying how I find these 3 and 4 letter answers the hardest. With larger words there's much more certainty than with these really short ones.

I think, in American slang, if you are "packing heat", you are carrying a gun.
