Hi Cerasus, I agree 27a just sounds wrong. Also, as you say, Chambers gives 'specs' as a plural noun which doesn't really fit either definition.

Strange one this week. I have two left, completely mystifying:
20A Although it’s proper it’s never given (7) A?R?A??
17D Having put up with contacts heading off to be introduced, becomes nervous (6/2) ???S?S/ ?P
Strong hints welcome!

Just finished this week's Everyman. It took much longer and left me confused. Haven't com across some of these before- sly for smart, senses for contacts ...

Unlike before, it left me with no satisfaction and am very disappointed. The clues are no longer elegant and precise. They lack humour. One didn't have a doubt when one got the answer right with prevous setters.

For non native speakers of English, one could derive the word from the clue. Now, some clues are just riddles.

After 30 years, thinking of taking up something else to occupy me on Sunday mornings. Recommendations welcome.

Hi Cymro, these were quite tricky and I'm not sure my answers are correct but I think the answers are:-

20a SURNAME (I think your first A might be wrong)

17d TENSES UP - The best I could come up with is PUT 'Up' around (l)ENSES as in contact lenses.

Thanks, Brendon - no problem. In view of the parsing I think you were right to give them to me! Obviously, I have got 20 D wrong: I thought that it was academy, a cryptic definition.

I need a hint for 21D...I have ?a?i?g
This is my last remaining entry
Otherwise, although the puzzle was a trifle quirky in spots, I found it mildly entertaining

Pogle2, it's always good to give the clue - then those without a copy can help. I don't do the puzzle, but if the clue involves New York, the 'saw' isn't a tool...
