Ah, so there was something missing!

This gets stranger and stranger - I did the crossword online and have just checked again to see if it's been updated or corrected but it still has the clue as I originally posted, sans 'pain'. Here is the link:-

I can confirm it's in the PDF version, in italics - I assume to suggest French "bread".
