I'm sure I have the correct answer from my crossing letters and the definition but would appreciate a parse for 1a please.
I guess there's a homophone in there and a subtracted A but I could be miles off.

Not a homophone - "report" gives the outside letters, then an achivement with a missing A, as you suggest, inside

It confirms my crossers were correct and nothing else fitted!

I have finished but there wasn't much fun there except 21a.
I can't believe it took me so long to get 11a either.

I did have eight still to get, but I have now finished, though I did get some further help from my friend in Sheffield (I'm in Exeter). At least 3 more answers I had nearly got but couldn't see why. It seems to me that Paul's clues are often doubly difficult as you have to get the synonym and then do something with it. These days I'm finding the synonyms difficult. I'd never have got 12d without the hint from Scorpiojo. So thank you all. I can get on with my chores now.
