I'm getting there but this is a bit of a bugger

Bobby, have you found enough letters to google the work and authors? There are quite a few full and partial anagrams where knowing the extra letters is a great help.

I am missing an eight letter answer, beginning with S (yes, bottom RH corner!) Which clue leads to this please?

Also stumped by 'Fabric canon sported in black'. (extra letter N). Any tips?

The 8 letter answer comes from "Prior mostly...", extra letter R, involving a 5 letter word for contempt.
Anagram of canon - n within a word for black.

Also the fabric is one of the "extra" answers that is inserted after the thematic move.

Cheers Tomsdad, got the translator about an hour ago and now have a full grid, apart from the four letter entry in the penultimate row where I have ?ote. I must have made a booby somewhere since I seem to have five extra words and nothing that fits said ?ote !!!

I can’t see the relevance of Young in the Ascot clue and also which letter to leave out. Thanks for any help.

unclued - "Young Conservatives" is YC - the Y is the extra letter
