The Stand is a noun.
Be an obligation is the definition. It's the usual four-letter word for hero, with the second letter of 'hero' inside.

I have completed apart from 5 across and 43 across
43 a, ?I?g?I?g
and is 5 a, murmur or muumuu ?
I probably have something wrong !

leon - I think 43ac must be SING-SING. In Chambers it's shown hyphenated (the tribal gathering). The prison is two words, and the preamble wouldn't allow for that.
If 5ac was 'muu-muu' (shown hyphenated in Chambers) we'd have too many hyphenated entries, so I think it must be MURMUR.
