I think there is a mistake in the clue to 44ac. in the Oldie jumbo crossword.
Assistant in Russia identified (4)
The word HAND fits in the grid but the wordplay leads to AIDE (hidden}.

I have now found 15ac does not fit. I have I*T* with the clue Present soldier with newspaper (4). Surely the answer is GIFT.

There is a mistake in the grid. The two entries are indeed GIFT and AIDE.

Yes, these should be the answers, but I'm wondering if entered as they could be now : 'IGTF' and 'IAED' that this is some sort of wordplay suggested by the preamble? Where it mentions that each of the seven words.. defines well as is defined by the other unclued entries... Gift Aid(e) when run together does make a phrase we all know...Bit obtuse but can't see a mistake being made by Antico in the Christmas Crossword. Surely not?!

Murobir, I have finished the crossword and it seems to simply be a case of a pair of wrong blocks (twice) in the grid. The correct words then fit OK.

As to the two unclued entries at 35a and 43a can anyone help? Two answers (perhaps Bell and Tinker) are to be defined by
M?U?E?I?G and R?D?N?
The entries at 15a and 44a still appear to be wrong.
