I'm stuck in the bottom right hand corner, help with 52D might let me finish.
52D Red Guard primarily holds sway, having ousted leader.(5) g????

GULES (It's the Red colour in heraldry)

G(aurd) + (r)ULES - holds sway (without leader)

Thank you very much Brendan I'm afraid I just don't know anything about heraldry colours, another new thing to learn

I'm exactly the same but heraldry, in one form or another, seems to crop up quite frequently, in The Times anyway.

......and not for the first time I've misspelled Guard!

Funny you should say that, since I've been a kid I've pronounced in my head gward and somehow that makes me spell it properly. I probably got it wrong and the whole class laughed at me so that was my solution, daft isn't it?

Not daft at all, I sometimes do proofreading and I'm always looking for helpful mnemonics. The odd thing is that if I paused for just a couple of seconds I would spell it correctly, but if I write in a flowing way, like in this thread, I'll look back and see I spelled it incorrectly - very strange.
