Thanks Mamya and Malone. I agree about the length of the clue (typo "in" for "on") but it is just so brilliant.
This is my (very) personal favourite, for which please forgive me. I have modified it a little

I forget now if it was Araucaria or Bunthorne, but I always liked

Cox at me (6,3,6)

It always seemed impossible that you could get such a long solution from so short a clue.

The GEGS clue formed a major part of an episode of Drop the Dead Donkey many years ago. The male newsreader spent the whole episode trying, and failing, to solve it. Then a courier comes in and tells him the answer - the show concluded with the newsreader chasing the courier all round London.
