Sunray, it's simpler than it looks. The first five words give the definition. The 'up front' is the usual crossword indicator - so the words left.....

Thank you both malone and marca.
I just looked up stipend in my crossword dictionary and it is right there.
Too easy and I made it complicated.

You're welcome, sunray. I don't like such long, wordy definitions - they sometimes lead me astray!

Half way through.

There may be an extra letter.
1d. Hardly any info about height of wood centuries ago (6)

27a. Ways intermittently demonstrated by visionaries (4)

5d. He may set out with no name (6)

44. What is the first letter of the answer?
Short salesman gets a rise in Arizona (4)

Thanks.

44 The salesman is a very famous American one, fictional.

27 Ways is the definition - just a clue where 'intermittently' leads to the necessary letters. I'd never seen the plural used before.

1 D. A rather odd-looking word, an old one (centuries ago), meaning 'of wood'. Height is the usual crossword abbreviation, the info is the usual short word, and the start of the answer is a short word, meaning 'hardly any' with a letter dropped.

Thanks malone.
I did get 5d. Tried different anagrams until I found the answer.

44. Miller's guy Willy.

I checked TCD for the plural on ways. It is not listed.
That stopped me.

28d the answer to more parched seems to be more like Sahara.
But parsing is not clear with where the first lady (L or Eve) comes in.

I can see Idaho in the middle.

Sunray, I didn't - and in some cases, couldn't! - parse my answers, so I might seem less than helpful in places. Glad I helped a bit.
