Hi chrise, in both cases "this" relates to the answer.
Re peterm; belt = synonym/definition as given by rossim + wear and tear (this) ...
My clue; this cut = synonym/definition + when anagrammed and added (could be applied); lace + (tear)* => lacerate another synonym (so virtually the same).
