27 is an anagram once you remove a T, sunray. For 6d and 7d I think it's an M (I don't have the clues any more) as you should get "scared" in 7d.

Thanks drxx.
Got it.
The bottom row clearly shows one of the books and hence the author.
Still a few clues to solve.

I have returned to this - much against my better judgement. The Listener was a stroll in the park in comparison!

Can some kind soul tell me where the perimeter works begin?

Cheers

It starts at the second cell in the top row, where the 1 is. Do "keep trying", bc, because when you get over the annoying stuff the ending (shading) is rather neat.

Thanks, Orson - (and for the encouragement).

My previous post is a bit spooky now that I've spotted a work in the bottom row!

Any help with a few last ones? 19a, 31a, 38a and 17d. I have most of the letters but just can’t finish them off. Also got one work from the anagram but can’t find the second. Can anyone tell me where it starts? Thanks so much. Need to finish this or I will go crazy!

19a gains a "G" but I can't parse it. Definition is "lower" as in tide going out.

17d loses an "H" - short person is BO(D) and definition "not exactly"

Despite my initial bad feeling about this puzzle it was well worth the effort at the end. Feeling immensely smug to have cracked it._
