Is the themed phrase a common expression in the UK?
I found it in Chambers, but had not heard it previously.

Mattrom, it's definitely not a common expression - I'd be surprised if many people had heard of it.

It was pretty tough with some obscurities, but I too am enjoying it.

However, 18d: Standard sheet in set (6) has me stumped.

I have ?A?CE?, could someone offer me a hint please?

Definition is set, wordplay is synonyms for standard + sheet. The latter is a 3 letter shortened form (given in Chambers but confirmation given in the full entry).

There's a three letter 'standard', often used in crosswords, and an unusual three-letter 'sheet' giving a set.

18d was my very last entry too; I just didn't think of this as a definition for set. This puzzle was a bit of a challenge but satisfying, unlike last week's offering.

Aristo, I had to check Chambers for the 'set' - and it was there, of course. Columba's a very fair setter!

I was just saying to syzygy the other day that I don't think anyone could do this without a Chambers.
I'm one of those poor souls who zooms in on most plants with their Latin names at the ready- takes something away from the childlike apprehension I so prefer. I knew this one, but had to look in Chambers for the expression, which I had never heard.
