Orson, I think the title is just a misprint - not disastrous, but it could have been!

Fair enough, sunray.

27d - can = toilet
11a - an Indian worker, with = w

I'm stuck on 12d too - I thought it might end in M. Also stuck on 1a and 1d but I've got the phrase pertaining to the centre. Don't get in a stew, sunray.

Orson, I wasn't convinced of my answer for 12 D - but I think it must have been right, as the thematic stuff worked! It doesn't end in M, but S.

1 D is ….hidden!

Thanks orson.
1d is hidden with 2 extra letters removed. It is what is usually at the front or back of a book.
1a Light is three letter acronym. Think Ait and change last letter.

I figured out the phrase and the victim in 21a. But have not figured out all 12 names.

I have H?D?? for 12d,
And KA?is for 27d.

orson, your and malone's hints helped.
I now have 12d for wraps up and did not realize that Muslim scholars can mean toilets.

And thanks to you, sunray, and malone. I've got those now. I just thought MAR might be involved in the middle.

Sunray, you should watch Carry on up the Khyber. It will increase your vocabulary!

Maybe the least well known of them. Clue to first name is in 17ac, “mile Newmarket”. Most famous for Kensington Place

orson, thanks for the suggestion.
I had never heard of it.
I saw the trailer, I don't think I can sit through the whole movie.
I was surprised to find the movie is available online for viewing.
