The first two words are the definition in 18.

It is surprising how easy it is to enter a lot of the answers given that adjacent entries aren't jumbles.

I've just sat down to start this one and am already confused. The end of the first sentence of the preamble doesn't make sense to me '...meant to ensure that Ring 5 (appearing in its original form)'. Eh?
Or am I being particularly dense?

Dylan and Gitto, in 18 “in English” is ANG.
Rad, thanks for your help with 3 - I have it now.
These clues are very tough going.

I agree with you, Gazzar. What does the end of the first sentence mean? I kept checking the online version in case there was a correction. can anyone help?

If you replace the words 'Ring 5' in the preamble with the words appearing in Ring 5, it makes a grammatically sensible sentence.

I disliked this puzzle a lot:-( Circular? Ugh! Jumbles, Ugh! Obscure entities in ring 1, ugh!

However, the clueing is excellent and extremely challenging.

The requirement to highlight the items in ring 3 is completely superfluous as one cannot disambiguate the jumbles correctly solving ring 3.

9 is also what you do to a firework (when you light it) and 12 is one of the 7 letter entries that is can also mean a washer for insulating. A nudge for 1 would be appreciated, now got 31 answers, 3 7 letter ones, and not much nearer to filling the grid!!

Gitto, what I do to a firework starts with S; 9 does not.
12 is not a 7-letter entry.

1 is the 7-letter entry in the first quadrant. The definition in 1 is the last 4 words. NOT ALL = SOME.

Gitto, I believe 12 is singular and only 6 letters.

Thanks Buzzb, my 12 is now right, but as a singular, not plural as I had as I had wrongly used. What I do with a firework also begins with as L, but I agree that S is a better description. I have tried numerous ways for SOME, I'll try again.
