Does anyone else think the solution to 6D goes into what one might not immediately think of as a gap?

Thanks to all and sundry. 6d takes a liberty with punctuation and spacing, as it says in the preamble!?

I'm still unsure what exactly you mean. Admittedly the interval in SPAR...E is the last possible interval, but still 'legal' surely ?

If that is where it goes, back to the drawing board! Neither of the 2 possibilities for 6 down that I have will go in there. One could be used as 2 words to start the sentence so not strictly 'a gap', hence my problem. Losing the will to live!

Anybody know why the example in the preamble shows a length of (8) for a 6-letter answer? More devilry no doubt.
