Having a bad morning...
Further confused with 12a. Is the answer a character in Julius Caesar or a Greek word meaning no charge?

Thanks Stevie. I seem to have the phrase 'Brutus wept' in my addled brain and the 'b' tied in with 'book'.

1a - Googling PRANASSUS gives a few hits, some probably typos but some suggest Colorado. This from the "Scientific American" of June 16 1859 Poetry section

In ancient times its flowery heights
We climbed astride on asses,
And now we take more daring flights,
And steam o'er steep Pranassus !
