Just make sure that the rows/columns with a clash in ... when altered ... they are all differnent letters then in each row or column....

top row and other row s and columns already have all different letters in them.

Thank you Bunty & Malone, I think I have 36a but that has confused my 28d (Containing nitrogenous substance ........ united Germany endlessly) and now I don't have a clue for that one, always presuming that I is now the penultimate letter.

28. Use U for United and add almost all of a word for what Germany was. Your ' I ' is correct.
