Thank you, syzzie. Most enjoyable. I do wonder whether 34A is a mistaken definition, unless my entry is wrong. Also, I don't quite get the parse for 10D. 13A is quite the gem.

Thanks, Syzygy.
I'm puzzled by 25a. I assume it's not the same as 21a, but can't see it.
I have ?I?LIN. The variations aren't helping me either.

Aristo, my Chambers has a definition of 34a as 'to fish for', and another for someone who would be an internet menace.

It is indeed the same, mattrom, because there are two of them in a 1A.

There's a difference between trawl and troll. Trawling is done with a net while trolling is done with a line. The two words are sometimes confused, and I was just wondering if that's the case here.

Sorry, guys.

I haven't had a chance to get to it yet.

Yes, Aristo. 25A was a bit of a surprise until the penny dropped. Had 40A by then so 42A was a snap.

As Mattrom said, 34A works for TROLL. From Chambers:
def 2. t.vb. - fish
def 3. n. - net menace
Brilliant clue. Also 13A, 28A, 2D, 12D.
OK, I like the racy ones. (-;

Parsing for 10D eludes me too, & not clear on some connections in the variations.
A - obvious
B - ? Are 52A + 4D supposed to be a homophone of 25A ?
C - Shakespearean characters, I assume.
D - 42A is part of the longer variations. So what? 24D could start with P or M. The former, at least, has some connection to the theme words.

Ah, yes. Of course. Very clever.

We're on the same page with everything else. I too started 24D with P, for the same reason, but then 23D has no connection, so why not M?

Also had the same clues starred!

I chose P for 24d. Only because an instrument is involved.

10d is a mystery.

If it was "A male four letters later" it could be E male announced, but it isn't.

I see your reasoning. Had no idea before.
However, if you start counting with A = 1, B = 2, etc, then it could work.
Poor clue though.
