I give up!

24d Characteristic spirit displayed in film and book.

Characteristic spririt = ETHOS

Presumably the ET is the lazy setter's "film", but where does the HOS come from?

Hosea - in the Bible - abbreviated to Hos.

...the abbreviation is common anyway, not just in this clue.

Thanks, Malone. I accumulate quite a lot of fairly arcane knowledge but it does not extent to abbreviations of the books of minor prophets!

ET for "film" in a clue was mildly amusing the first time I came across it but through over-use it has become a cliche (and, I would profess, lazy).

Delete "extent" Insert "extend". Lazy proofreading by me!

Finally doing this one. Last clue to get ...

11a Pound for one publication: one's opening it (7)

i?a?i?t

I'd appreciate a parse, unless it's obvious, thanks.

The word "it" contains "mag"/publication, and one's is "is".
Imagist.

Thanks rusty, much appreciated. Was sidetracked by looking for a synonym for pound as a verb. But that's the art of clue-setting!
