Thanks crates - all understood now. The length of 32d had also thrown me - now just for the folding which seems complicated too!

Could some kind person help me with 12 Down ? I have the first 4 letters and the 6th letter but I can't find any words which are remotely to do with the clue !
Thanks very much.

Samovar - the first two words are the definition. Short form for each, anagram of late and d for director. Remember it's two words. Hope this helps!

Got it now, thanks Smartie. It wasn't in my very old Chambers, I obviously need to get a new one!

You're very welcome! It's a bit late to put a new BRB on your Christmas list. Is your birthday coming up? ;-)

All the best for the festive season to everyone who contributes to this great site and a special thank you to the compilers of the best crossword in the world!

Samovar, I have a 2008 TCD, the answer to 12 appears under LEAD (towards the end of the 2nd definition), not under EAT. In general I find the older edition sufficient; occasionally there are words not previously listed, online help usually resolves any issues. I wouldn't say that there's a need to rush out and buy another...If it was you who asked the same question on AB, well, that was a response in tune with the season ! "Sorry pal, we don't give answers here, but you can try your luck down the road at the crossword solver site..."

Like Orson, I'm confused about the folding. Does the bottom left corner blank fold to square 29 and the bottom right corner to square 5? If so, I can't see how this is even remotely symmetrical.

Demeter - the bottom left folds underneath to line up with 29, as does the bottom right - underneath to 5, creating the thematic shape.
