I have only 12 extra words so do not understand how and why the answers are
converted to the grid entries.
1a is Progress and becomes Gold winner.
19d is Reading and becomes a son of Zeus.
28d is Passage but becomes a horse.

Also help on 8d:
Saw unscrupulous fellow switched outside croquet ball (7)
croquet may be extra?

Thanks.

Hi Sunray

I've emailed you old chap with an explanation just in case people want to keep the theme to themselves on this thread.

Cheers

micky666 - Perhaps bananabean will give you a better answer to 7ac as he's solved that clue. For what it's worth, my answer is SET, a treble definition -
1) 'Amiable people generally engaged'
2) 'Company' (in this case a dance company).
3) ------
My memory might be playing tricks on me, but I think this setter has used the huge Chambers entry for 'set' in this way in the past.
It's a poor answer to a bad clue if it's right, and clearly unfair for a clue that can only be cold-solved.
I didn't like this phrase in the preamble either -
'...how ten answers must be treated'.
Treated? How are they treated?
I did like the basic idea though.
