Thanks, Syzygy, enjoyed. F was the first triplet to fall into place.
I don't see the parsing for 20a. - apart from being an anagram, of course.

Thanks, syzygy, that was great fun.

Mattrom, the 'faller' is very big in children's literature.

Down the rabbit hole, Mattrom. ;-)

Fun puzzle, but I'm stuck on parsing for these two:
16A - def is obvious, but the rest ... ?
26A - def - American author
belt level - martial arts
What explains the A at the end?

16 You cut the end off a word meaning 'cut the end off'.

Like you, I couldn't parse 26 A.

Thanks for 16, Malone. It's so obvious.

Any further ideas about 26 ?

That's the only clue I had a question mark next to. I see DAN for belt level, and the A is given in the clue, so what's "headed person"?

Exactly. I still can't make sense of that part.
Even reading it as "level headed person", ?
Oh well, next month we'll see.

I had wondered at first whether there was some belt level called D. Headed person could then be (M)AN; then, of course, A. Can't find a level D belt anywhere though.
