Unfortunately INDIGO (which makes most sense) is six letters!

Any clues?

I can't parse it, but my answer is confirmed in Chambers as a dye. The word is also connected to a couple of others in the grid.

PS. I could be wrong!

Thanks malone, sorted now. The parsing is the 22nd letter of the Greek alphabet followed by the chemical symbol for a certain metal.

Thanks, seamus - I foolishly only saw the metal/chemical symbol on the outside edges of the answer. I should have been more conscientious!

Can't see any obvious link between puddle and oar in Chambers. Can anyone clarify?

Also, ASHORE can = land but how about the "Not on..."?
