Thanks, ginge, I thought of that but I could only think of an old queen.

So I've finished but I wonder about the clue for 8d. Either I'm parsing it wrongly or else the Biblical character is the victim and not the killer.

I'm stuck with 10 and 31. I know what I'm looking for, but so far without success. Having the def would help.

Hi cockie,

10d defn is "as usual".

31d defn is "plant".

Stuck!
Got each set of 5 thematic modifications.
Got a full grid.
Haven't identified all of the extra letters to be added. I've got 2:T, 7:H, 12:E, 25:N, 4:V, 18:S, 21:I, 33:L, but I can't make any sense of this.
Any hints as to the locations of the others?

If you have the thematic alterations do you not have the work'so title or are you just asking for the placement of the missing letters. I'm guessing the former as you would then "know" 34d.
A very well known novel (3, 10, [3 thematic] ).
I hope this helps but if not post again.

Thanks, Ginge - that was a big help! In my search for the missing letters I'd missed, I'd looked not further than the "L". Got the book, found the cryptically indicated author - I'll have to say, I found the resulting grid a little ho-hum

Sorry, ginge, but I do not understand "synonempty". My guess is 16 cells form an L shape. If so I do not understand cryptic form of surname!! Initials are fine.

It was simply predictatext doing its thing after I mistyped, synonym.
