Cheers syzygy, nice puzzle. Thankfully the (12)s were straightforward and "set" the grid. Lots of delightful clues with my favourites ending up 12a, 16d (very nicely hidden) & 28d*.

Thanks, syzzie. I thought this was one of Maltby's best. Starred: 28D, 16D, 3D. I don't fully get the wordplay for 7A though.

I know the term, ginge; it's very commonly used over here. It's the parse I don't get.

The term was new to me aristo, I tookthe wordplay to be the 1st 4 letters of an 13 letter synonym of upright.

Ah, yes! Thanks, ginge. I did wonder whether the term would be in Chambers. It is! As an Americanism of course.

Thanks, Syzygy, great puzzle. I made it more difficult for myself by overlooking some of the (what were later obvious) anagrams.
I first put in the last lot of 8-letter words, as they intermesh.
Favourites included 15d, 28d, 23d and 4d.
