31a is A (one) 'supporting' (ie backing up) TRIO (threesome). The N has been lost from position 5 in the solution.

3d is HAS (holds) round M IN (thousand in), with the E having gone from position 2.

...and I think he should thank her for providing a half-decent solution that fits the pattern ?RIOA with an N omitted...the municipality of IRIONA in Honduras (pop 21,207 in 2015) was probably the best of the rest!
