I'm not envying BBM's task in sorting out a winner from this brilliant selection! So many great (and different!) ways of clueing such a short word!

No more entries please . We have a good crop of 31 clues from 11 setters. On the first pass 27 of them have made the shortlist.

Need to whittle this down - back within the hour for the result.

I must stress that my preference for a particular clue will be subjective.

A very hard choice this week. I imagined myself faced with _ A _ _ in the grid for the last one in, wanting both satisfying solve and to put the folded paper down and put the kettle on.

Some nice touches paul's FT ref at #3 and FA at #6, fiery's 11 clues included a great def in supersonic at #17 - is that some kind of record?
Aristo's clever device in #34 and I could go on and on.

Thanks to each and every one of you for joining in and I hope you enjoyed writing the clues as much as I did reading them.

In the end it came down to two clues where the answer was "hidden in plain sight" so just ahead of mattrom's #4 is pigale's #32 which uses a less common synonym -
