(Yes, my counting was indeed "dodgy". We ended up, I think, with 26 clues from 15 setters after FJ's last entries).

I'm responsible for introducing "benny and hot" to Paris! (It's still a local drink, dating back to the "Accrington Pals" in WW1 - most local pubs have a flask of hot water in case one of the old codgers asks for one). We'd been on an open-top bus ride in late October and were frozen when we got back to the hotel. We went in to the bar next door and I ordered "Trois Benedictine's avec eau chaud, s'il vou plait." "Quoi?"

It reminded me of when we were in Brittany. Our (at-the -time) 7 year old daughter wanted vinegar on her chips. We asked for some, which was brought in a tiny wine glass. All the staff peered round the corner to see what this small English girl was going to do with it!

@chrise: many years ago, I had to explain to the hotel barman what a shandy is. It didn't help that lemonade didn't seem to be known either.

The following year, I was staying at the same hotel and asked him for a low alcohol beer shandy. He interpreted that as being a beer mixed with a low alcohol beer.
