Could be CLUTCH if your letters are not definite.

E is from undue (unwarranted, innapropriate)
R is from better (improve)
H is from Scotch (whiskey)

They sound highly likely - ignore my suggestion!

Yours was a good suggestion Nemo. I also thought gear but nothing matches in the A column (LHS) I will have to wait for the printed solution on Saturday I think

"transmission component" usually seems to be GEAR, GEARWHEEL, etc. but they don't fit either

Thanks Mattrom. I think I have probably made an error in the grid construction, but cannot see where.

I have gearwheel.
Also undue, better and scotch.

On the other side I have stupidity, another 9 letter word to match.
