It was soon after 7 am in a secluded lane and of course I thought he was dead (I didn't see the woman at first) and phoned 999. After a long time of trying to locate us, I was told to hammer on a window, which woke them up (eventually). They had been too sleepy to drive and had the engine on for warmth. It was a while before my heart returned to normal beating! I also felt stupid.

Thanks yet again syzygy, best Harper's puzzle for some time in my opinion even if a tad more difficult without the shaded squares within the grid confirming the expression (though I now note you've provided them here in a subsequent post). Really liked 47a & 13d* though surprised not to see the double definitions at 38a & 41d nor the required abbreviation for 4d given in the latest edition of Chambers (cheers google).
