Does it fit the 'donkey' part of the clue? 'Ingine' is in Chambers, but is defined only as 'ability, genius'. 'Donkey engine' is listed, so I was able to make 'engine' work - just?

I was taking ingine as a Scots variant of engine which also gives an i for one in the clue rather than the initial e of engine which doesn't fit so well.

I agree with Malone.

One bearing- is how I read it-which gives E for East.

I can't see what bearing is there for in the other parsing?

Then gin in NE for Tyneside

Xerxes, I agree that 'ingine' actually works better, but perhaps I'm over-reliant on Chambers for confirming things.

We shall see in a little while which is correct!

I can see bearing working if I was at the end. One bearing could parse as nginei?

To those who do this puzzle regularly - do you have a subscription or is there another way of accessing it? I've been using the 3-free-a-month option to date.

Just back from holiday and a surprise awaited - a lengthy thread about a Doc puzzle. Maybe he's mislaid his Brewer's.
One iffy bit for me - does 1dn make a sort of sentence (an instruction to an animal) or is it three unconnected words?
