Am I right in thinking there might be more than one letter missing from the word play in some clues?

I think there must be, Nelson - I counted the number of clues+deducted 18 for the misprints.

... makes sense nelson... as 35 + 18 don't add up to 44 clues

Any help with:
20a Squatting? Damned good choice with rent ending (9)
28d Eisenhower finally overriding pressure of peace to create second front (6)

Hi kirky - I wonder whether 20a might be CROUCHING, which fits for me. An anagram (damned) of CHOICE with no E (rent ending) and G for good and R, U and N not provided in wordplay.

Yes there are up to 3 letters in some answers which are not indicated in the wordplay..... 20a is an example. The R, U and N are to be shaded.

I suppose it's all going to spell out M D or something similar to coincide with the puzzle number?

Kirky, 28 D is another affected clue. The 'Eisenhower finally' indicates the first letter and four more letters come from 'overriding pressure of peace'. There's a letter with no wordplay in the middle. The definition is 'create a second front'.

I finished this earlier - it was good fun, quite cleverly done.
