Finally done, not as hard as it first seemed although I had never heard of the tendon and 41 took a while. It's why we do them though - no satisfaction if they're too easy.

e.g ab SOL utist is the synonym for "extremist" (superfluous word)
Within this word there is a deity (IN CAPITALS) from one classical belief system, which must be replaced by its equivalent manifestation in an earlier classical belief system, as indicated by 1 across.
so
Ab SOL utist = Ab HELIOS utist

MARS upial = mammal
LUNA tic = crazy

I've just noticed the reference, in the preamble, to 1 Across being in Collins Dictionary. I don't have a copy of that, and am wondering if the definition there has the Z version of the word or is it just that the S version isn't specifically listed in Chambers? Thanks for any help.
