How many are found inside, live: Number

I can only see FOUR but the parse for the cryptic clue is totally beyond me.
Please can someone put me out of my misery?

I can only think that in "side" and "live" there are four letters. Pretty feeble, though!

The cryptic clue should stand on its own.
The second clue is a separate quick one ( which I try not to look at!).
I wonder if there's a typo somewhere.

It makes a little more sense as a clue without the "Number" bit, but it's still pretty feeble, I think!

Reading "inside" as "in side" is called a "lift and separate" clue in some circles.

I wouldn't have got it without the 'number' bit and the two crossers!

How many = definition. Ie 'Four'

I think it would have read better as 'alive'.

Just saw it, rossim. Yes it is better than I thought it was!

The "inside" of "alive" would be 54, not 4, I fear!
