I'm finding this one quite tough. It's not often that the week's Listener is easier than the EV.

I have the completed grid and the phrase so I am assuming that the included entries are to be replaced with the Latin meaning of the phrase, which does indeed give leave real words.
As usual, I can't parse every answer (not that it really matters) e.g. 21a and 39a.

'Unclued' entries I mean lol.
