I read the other one as an ad lit with used as the anagram indicator

but im still baffled as to why the answer to 1a is edgewise (apart from the anagram fit)

please dont think im being funny. im not. I just dont understand the mail nowdays. especilly when it used to be my forte.

I don't fully understand it either - I don't think it's a very good clue

The only thing I could think was that it was an ad lit with how replaced (the wedge, that is) suggesting the solution
