Guest was the visitor. Take out the U for university and replace it Ay, positive response - it becomes G ay est, Gayest/brightest.

I've got no decent reasoning for the other two, sorry!

8d replace i(middle of guido) with ebb (decline) in p i le...defn is gunpowder

How does 17d work in the grid please and why?
...assume it's an anagram of wonover?

Bunty, I've just realised you asked how 17 D worked in the grid, and why. It's thematic and is affected by a redaction.
