The 10 letter word is part of the wordplay...

The 4 letter word and the 5 letter word each supply one letter to the answer.

Take an obvious synonym of the 10-letter word and you should get the captain's name. Then follow the directions in the across answers, in order.

I think I have the 10, 6, 4, 2, 3, 5 correct, however, I'm at a complete loss as to the captain's name. My ship has sailed and I think I've followed the required route. The only two captains I can think of are 4-letters, or 6-letters but I can't make either work.

he is 8 letters.... 1st 6 are a synonym of your 10 letter word, then L from the 4 letter word ..which you then put inside your 6 letter synonym... then add S from your 5 letter word.
If you have followed the required route you should have the shape of something....

Ask again if you are still stuck

Hi there, is your spike on the right hand (east) side? That's the only place I can see a P next to an S....my only spikes are at the top (north), the rest is all small blocks. It's really easy to miss a direction...took me 3 goes to get the full, correct shape.
