Thanks very much...Thought it might be...but couldn't find in dictionary??

I had put it in the crossword as "lateish", but when you said you couldn't find it in the dictionary, I checked in both my Chambers and my Concise Oxford.....and you are right.
It is only given as "latish" - no "e"!

It may be an alternative, possibly American spelling ?

When that happens, it is usually given as such in the dictionary, though.
In this instance, I can see no mention of it as an alternative spelling- even though I'd assumed it was such and had filled in the crossword grid accordingly!
If you do find it , please post up the reference!
I should like to know.
